WHAT IS IT?

Leishmaniasis is a disease transmitted by the female fly Lutzomya. These mosquitoes carry a microorganism (Leishmania) in their saliva, which causes illness when infected.

HOW IS IT TRANSMITTED?

A person or animal (such as dogs and chickens) infected with leishmaniasis is bitten by the female fly. This insect then bites another healthy individual, infecting them with the disease. These flies bite exposed, unclothed areas of the body, especially at night.

WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS?

There are three main forms of leishmaniasis:

  1. Visceral or systemic leishmaniasis is the most serious because, if untreated, it is almost always fatal due to enlarged liver and spleen, weight loss, and anemia.

  2. Cutaneous leishmaniasis, known locally as "llaga" (flagellate), is the most common and generally causes ulcers or sores on the skin and disfigurement.

  3. Mucosal leishmaniasis affects the mouth, nose, and throat.
